In life, everyone has different aspirations as we journey through time. These and numerous aspirations can be referred to as Terminal value. Rokeach, a psychologist who has studied the behaviour of people of the different classes did mention a few of these terminal values of man such as self-esteem, peace, comfortable living, a beautiful world, pleasure, recognition, self-actualization, happiness, freedom, and many more.
Terminal values are enveloped by the question, “what?”
But to achieve all and many more of these terminal values, we need or adapt what we call instrumental values. Instrumental values can be considered the channel, ways to obtain or carry these terminal values into reality. Instrumental values are concaved by “how?”
Life, as it is, has many definitions due to how people experience or perceive it to be. Man is bounded by the decisions he makes in life. No one is bounded by the decisions of anyone. It doesn’t matter what that person is to you. The problem from generations has never been the terminal values of life but rather the instrumental values.
How you obtain your terminal values is determined by the kind of situation or phenomenon you are directly affected by. That decision shouldn’t be introduced or called for if you are directly affected by what is going on at that moment in your life. Take heed that you fall not at the mercy of dangerous phenomena unless you steadily open your eyes and get out of that situation before you can decide on what needs to be done.
A wrong instrumental value will lead to greater problems in the long run associated to the terminal value in concern. Shortcuts in obtaining your terminal values today will also cut short your terminal values tomorrow unexpectedly.
