*Righteousness,Faith and Grace*
Righteousness simply means to do what is right. Every human being including the most evil people on earth want to do right. I have even realized that *people lie because they want people to see them as righteous people.* So what is righteousness. and how can it be attained? Every culture, race, religion or creed on earth have an awareness of some form righteousness and also what is evil. In the 21st the big question that is raised by philosophers and some religious leaders alike is that; Who determines what is right or what is the standard for righteousness? The funny thing is that the people who ask these questions all condemn terrorism, genocide, rape, racism etc. These people call leaders like Adolf Hitler evil and the Soviet Union as a evil empire. So how did they know that these things are evil?
In order to do justice to our subject let’s measure righteousness against the 10 commandments( do not lie, steal, murder, covet, commit adultery, mention the name of God in vain) which manifest itself in different forms in every religion and creed. Then goal of every religion or philosophy is to create a society where righteousness thrives. Many philosophers and religious leaders came up with ways of achieving this and so created laws and rules in order to attain righteousness. *It is important to note here that the laws they created was not itself righteousness but a path to righteousness* For e.g. the Buddhist believes that by meditating and separating yourself from the pleasures of this world you can reach Nirvana ( A state of immortality and righteousness). The Muslim also believes that by washing of hands, legs, face, mouth, ears and abstaining from certain foods then they can attain righteousness. For the Jew, they believe that by keeping the commandments of the Torah and sacrificing goats and sheep they will attain righteousness. The philosophers of Europe also theorized a state governed laws and the rule of law will create a peaceful and just society. Democracy is seen as the answer or path to righteousness.
In all these religions and philosophy, you are made to do something in order to attain righteousness. In order words you work to attain this state. But you see the problem is not that man doesn’t know what is good or right, the problem is how to do it. In Romans 7 Paul said in him is the will to do good and yet he finds himself doing that which is not good. If we go by the ten commandments nobody reading this piece will ever be righteous because it is impossible to fulfil all of them. If you fulfil all and break just one you are still unrighteous. It is impossible keep up with the 10 commandments for the rest of your life, you will by all means break one at one point in your life and God knows that.
*The greatest curse of Man is his stubbornness to have his own way* *What we define as righteousness is really our pride in action.* People who believe their strength made them righteous easily criticise others and look down on others. In Hinduism the Caste system is very strong because some are viewed as unholy. For some reason we think we are smart and can define what is right. We are even confused about our sexuality and we still think we can define what is right. Sometimes Man wants to act as though he is smart. If we are smart we wouldn’t have invented enough nuclear bombs to destroy the only habitable place in the universe. The people we point as evil didn’t come from Mars. They came from our societies. Our societies nurtured them. These people had the courage to do what was inside your heart SELAH . *Righteousness cannot be attained by what you do* *Any attempt to do so will end in frustration, guilt and self doubt*
All these commandments and laws was to keep us and guide us unto Jesus Christ. Righteousness is a gift from God, you don’t work for it, you only accept it. Jesus is not a religious leader just as paracetamol has no colour or race or religion but cure headaches so is Jesus. He is the answer to what we all desire. So how do we attain righteousness? 🤔.
